Save An Island Lighthouse

Established in 2015, the SAIL² (Save An Island Lighthouse²) Subcommittee operates under the Islands Historical Society to preserve two (hence the ²) historic lighthouses: Peters Island Light and Brier Island Light & Alarm (or “Western Light”).
The SAIL² Subcommittee focuses on restoration, community engagement, fundraising, and education. Key objectives include conducting regular inspections, developing restoration plans with experts, organizing outreach programs, and pursuing funding opportunities for project support. Responsibilities also involve regular meetings to discuss progress, overseeing project management, and maintaining documentation for transparency. Open to volunteers with an interest in history and preservation, the subcommittee aims to ensure these lighthouses remain vibrant symbols of maritime history for future generations. The two lighthouses are:
  • Peters Island Light, located on a tiny island in the passage between Westport, Brier Island and Freeport, Long Island. While management of both properties is important, it is presently the lighthouse on Peters Island that is in utmost need of repair.
  • Brier Island Light & Alarm – more commonly known as Western Light – which is located on the Bay of Fundy side of Brier Island.

Donate now!Islands Historical Society was formed in 1986 to “preserve, protect and promote” the social history of Long and Brier Islands, Digby County, Nova Scotia. The Society is CRA registered charity # 892211244RR0001.
